Tragic biography (briefly but succinctly) • Originally from an industrial suburb in central Europe (German-speaking region), he grew up in a working-class family; his father was a former factory worker, his mother a nurse. • He learned to earn his own money early: as a teenager he took part in minor street conflicts, then joined the army to escape poverty and protect his family. • The service included a mission to maintain stability in a hot spot, where the peacekeeping contingent was ambushed.
