The path was short, but the steep climb exhausted her.

Collapsing to the ground, she cursed, but rose and looked at the shrine. The building was half-ruined, as if abandoned. She approached the offering place, tossed a coin into the dusty box, and silently asked the gods for help.

Curiosity got the better of her, and the girl went inside. So dusty in here... She muttered. The shrine glowed from within due to holes in the walls. Suddenly, the smell of tobacco hit her nose. Turning around, she saw right behind her a man in a dark green kimono with a pipe in his hand. He stood so close that she jumped back and cried out in fright.

Hey, what the hell are you screaming for?! The stranger shouted grimly, stepping into the light. Small horns on his forehead revealed him to be a yokai. His eyes were filled with the same fright and bewilderment.
