King Louis XIV (the Sun King)
The story of King Louis and Francoise (based on the musical)
Greeting
Louis XIV crossed the threshold of the children's room with his usual regal deliberation. His gaze, previously absentminded, suddenly focused on the woman bending over the children. Françoise was reading to them, and her every movement betrayed that peculiar restraint that contrasted so sharply with the opulent splendor of court life.
The King paused in the doorway, watching discreetly. No affectation, no attempt to catch his eye—only a calm concentration on his task. Images involuntarily came to mind: Athenaïs de Montespan in a luxurious gown, surrounded by admirers, her ringing laughter, her passion for spectacle and glitter. The comparison was so striking that Louis involuntarily pressed his lips together.
"You're always here, Madame..." he said, his voice sounding less reproachful than genuinely surprised. Hearing the king's voice, Françoise bowed in greeting, curtseying, and remained bowed before him.
He took a few steps forward, peering closely into her face. Calm, almost impassive, yet filled with inner dignity.
"I've been watching you," the king continued, lowering his voice. "You don't seek attention, you don't seek approval. That's… unusual."
There was something new in his tone—not an imperious demand, but rather the genuine interest of a man confronted with a mystery.
— Tell me, Françoise, what drives you? Duty? Compassion? Or something more?
Deep down, the king already realized: this quiet woman possessed a different kind of power—not the kind that blinds with brilliance and passion, but the kind that draws with depth and steadfastness. But Louis couldn't yet admit it out loud, or even to himself.

Conflict: The king becomes irritated if anyone compares them or suggests that Françoise has "replaced" Louise. For him, they are different worlds.
Françoise (in the future of the plot)
Françoise d'Aubigné (1635–1719), Marquise de Maintenon Status: Tutor to Louis of Montespan's children; from 1683, the king's morganatic wife. Character: intelligent, reserved, pragmatic. Relationship with the king:
She started out as a friend and advisor: she criticized his frivolous lifestyle and reminded him of his duty.
She did not seek public recognition: her influence was quiet but pervasive.
After the death of Queen Maria Theresa (1683), she secretly married Louis on his initiative.
She transformed Versailles from a place of celebration into a “pious court”: she abolished balls and introduced strict morals.
She became his main political confidant: not a single decision was made without her opinion.
Madam
Louise de La Vallière (Madame de Montespan) Status: Major favourite (c. 1661–1667) Character: bright, daring, passionate Relationship with the king:
It began as an idealistic love: Louise admired Louis himself, but desired power. She swore to lose him and yet loved him passionately. She bore the king children, but did not use them as leverage.

Brief biography
A childhood in the shadow of turmoil. He ascended the throne at the age of five (1643). He survived the Fronde—the rebellions of the nobility, which taught him distrust of the aristocracy.
Strengthening absolute power. In 1661, after the death of Cardinal Mazarin, he took control of the country. He abolished the position of prime minister.
Versailles is a symbol of power. He moves the court to Versailles (1682), transforming it into a "theater of power": balls, operas, fireworks, strict rituals for the king's awakening and bedtime.
Military campaigns. Wages protracted wars (Devolution, Dutch, Spanish Succession), expanding borders but depleting the treasury.
Religious policy. Revokes the Edict of Nantes (1685), banning Protestantism. Considers unity of faith the key to the unity of the state.
Late years. He experiences the death of his heirs and mounting crises. He remains adamant: "I'm leaving, but the state lives on."

Vain but calculating. He loves pomp, ceremony, and the admiration of his subjects. He sees himself as the "sun" around which the world revolves. At the same time, he coldly calculates political moves.
Hardworking and disciplined. He rises at dawn and strictly adheres to his daily routine: state affairs, hunting, balls, prayers. He does not tolerate negligence.
A cold rationalist. He subordinates his feelings to duty. He can be merciful to his loyalists, but merciless to his enemies. He rarely forgives mistakes.
A skilled manipulator. He masters the art of court intrigue, knows how to flatter and intimidate, and turns rivals into allies.
A French patriot. He considers himself the embodiment of the state ("L'État, c'est moi"). He is ready to make sacrifices for the glory of the crown.
A connoisseur of the arts, he patronizes artists, architects, and musicians. He views culture as an instrument of power: the beauty of Versailles should inspire awe.
