Wonder Woman's costume has varied over time, although almost all of her appearances in her various incarnations have retained a certain form of armor, the tiara, bracelets, and star symbols in their design.[154] While the design of her costume was originally based on American symbolism and iconography, it allowed for a deeper explanation of her Amazonian roots. During a flashback scene in Wonder Woman Volume 3,[155] Hippolyta orders the creation of a garment for Diana, inspired by the night sky on the night of Diana's birth: a red huntress moon and a field of deep blue stars, and the eagle breastplate, a symbol of anthropomorphic representations of Athena.

At the time of her debut, Wonder Woman wore a red T-shirt with a gold eagle emblem, a white belt, a skirt sprinkled with blue stars, and red and gold go-go boots. This uniform was entirely based on the American flag, as Wonder Woman at that time was a quintessential American icon.

Wonder Woman's personality and tone as a woman have ranged from that of a typical, epic warrior to a compassionate and serene ambassador, and at other times, even a naive and innocent person. All of this has served the essence of the character well—her balance between the martial side of things and the loving side. Writer Gail Simone's Wonder Woman stories were widely praised during her run on the series, receiving a very positive review from Dan Phillips of IGN, who noted that she shaped Diana into a relatable and endearing character.

But one of the pillars, and the third original intention, of her personality was to be an outsider, something that would differentiate her from her current status quo, especially the one she represents in the name of humanity and love. The New 52 version of the character has been portrayed as younger, very headstrong, loving, fierce, and stubborn. Brian Azzarello stated in a video interview with DC Comics that they are building a very "confident," "impulsive," and "kind-hearted" character. He referred to her compassionate nature as representing both her strength and her weakness.

She possesses great strength that easily rivals that of the most powerful Kryptonians (Superman, Supergirl) and incredible intelligence, having knowledge of magic and science, speaking more than 10 languages, and being considered one of the wisest and most intelligent members of the Justice League. She can fly at great speeds. She is vulnerable but is considered goddess-like by the other superheroes because she does not age, is immortal, and possesses extraordinary beauty. In addition, she is an exceptional hand-to-hand combatant, with or without weapons, trained in fighting styles used by the Amazons and knowledgeable in Eastern martial arts. She trains daily with League members such as Batman and Black Canary, even surpassing them in hand-to-hand combat. On several occasions, she has been seen training with the I-Ching, an excellent martial artist and former teacher of Bruce Wayne. [126]

In addition to being the Amazons' ambassador to the rest of the world, Wonder Woman possesses amazing superhuman abilities and gifts, granted to her by the Greek gods in their victory. These include a magical lasso that compels truth, causes memory loss, and is indestructible. Her tiara doubles as a boomerang, and her reflective bracelets are made of an alloy of materials, including a metal native to Paradise Island called "feminum" (in the Golden Age), which is impervious to all types of rays, bullets, and other projectiles; "amazonium" (Silver Age), very similar to the former; and fragments of Zeus's shield, the Aegis (post-Crisis). She always prefers to promote peace rather than war and uses persuasion rather than super strength to subdue evildoers.

Wonder Woman has two weaknesses in the post-crisis era: she loses her powers when she is tied with her own magic lasso, and also if a man joins her bracelets together in such a way that they immobilize her as if they were handcuffs.

Outside of canon, her goddess powers made her capable of wielding Thor's Mjolnir, although it may be that due to her characteristics such as nobility, bravery, among others inherent to this character, she is worthy of its power; this occurred in the Marvel vs DC Comics crossover where she faced Storm.
