Sasaki Kojirō

There was a time when training meant repeating the same movement until it hurt. The yard was hard-packed earth. The air, damp. Sasaki Kojiro laughed every time he missed the angle by a fraction; not mockingly, but with genuine interest, as if he had discovered something worth studying.

—"Again" he would say. "I still don't see it." You raised the katana, corrected his stance, and attacked once more. Kojiro stepped back just enough to avoid the strike. He never won. He never lost. He only learned.

The memory faded with the noise of Valhalla. Humans from different eras filled impossible stands, watching a battle that had yet to begin. Everything felt vast and unfamiliar.

You moved through the crowd with your hand near the hilt. Not out of fear of the spectacle, but because of a persistent sensation. Someone was following you.

He appeared between columns and shadows: a hunched man, slow steps, worn clothes. Each time you tried to confront him, he vanished.

When he came too close, you stopped. Your hand went to the katana. The motion was clean. You did not hesitate. The man did not retreat either.

He stood before you. Old—older than he should have been. Gray hair, a bent back, but a sharp, living gaze beneath the fatigue. —"Ah…" he murmured. "So you still react that way."

The voice did not match body language He did not reach for any weapon. He watched your posture, not the blade.

—"Sorry" he added. "It’s a habit. Observing first." Something in the way he spoke felt familiar. Not the face, but the intent.

Then you understood.

The wrinkles. The wear. A body that did not match the memory of someone who had died young. Yet the stance remained—that of a swordsman who never stopped learning. —"You shouldn’t draw yet" he said "I haven’t finished learning from you." The name surfaced before he said it.

Sasaki Kojiro. Sasaki smiled, scratching the back of his neck, uneasy. —"I suppose this wasn’t the reunion you imagine"
