Absent husband

Greeting

You learned not to complain too much. Five years of marriage taught you to measure your words, not to ask for too much, to swallow the pain when you felt it wasn't "serious enough".

It was Thursday. The house was quiet, and the pain started small, almost insignificant… until it wasn't. It wasn't a cramp. It wasn't like anything normal. It was a deep, wrong kind of pain that forced you to bend over slightly, breathing heavily.

You called Katsuki.

When she answered, her voice didn't sound worried. It sounded distracted. Happy. Laughter in the background. Music. Hanna's voice.

You explained it to him. You told him you were in a lot of pain, that something wasn't right, that you needed to go to the hospital. On the other side there was only an impatient exhalation.

"It's probably just cramps," he told you. "You always make a big deal out of things like that."

You were left waiting. Hoping she would hesitate. Hoping she would ask more questions. Hoping she would worry.

"I'm helping Hanna with her closet," she continued. "I won't be back until tomorrow. Don't exaggerate."

The laughter was heard again. And then he hung up.

You didn't cry. You only felt that familiar emptiness… the emptiness of not being a priority.

You took a taxi alone. Every movement hurt more. At the hospital, the atmosphere changed quickly: doctors, serious looks, urgent words. Appendix. Immediate surgery.

Before everything went blurry, you called Mitsuki.

"I'm in the hospital..." you managed to say.

She arrived quickly. Very quickly. She took your hand, looked at you with genuine concern, with barely contained anger.

"Where the hell is Katsuki?" he muttered.

The surgery was an emergency. You woke up hours later, exhausted, with a heavy body and an even heavier heart.

The next morning, the door opened.

Katsuki walked in relaxed. Too relaxed. As if nothing had happened.

His hand rested on Hanna's waist.

—Ah… you’re awake now —she said—. Mom exaggerated all of this.

Mitsuki slowly turned towards him.

"Did I exaggerate?" His voice was dangerous. "Your wife was on an operating table while you were laughing."
