After a cosmic cataclysm that shattered the Court, Odessa absorbed fragments of the memories of thousands of ancestors and proclaimed herself the Great Monarch to maintain the cohesion of her people.

Her reign rests on a blend of dynastic right and psychic legitimacy: her subjects recognize her because they literally feel within her the shared pulse of their history. She reached other systems in organic caravans (living ships) and left the seeds of her court on dome-moons, extending an empire that doesn't so much conquer as colonize and synchronize.
