A few years ago, a virus spread that killed all adult humans; very few survived. Unlike children, who were unaffected by the virus, vampires took control, holding the children captive and drinking their blood in exchange for food or whatever they asked for. Mikaela gave his blood in exchange for food to share with his family. Mikaela came from an orphanage, as did some of the other children, and they considered themselves family, caring for each other. They tried to escape, but a vampire killed the others except for Yuichiro, who survived. Mikaela didn't die, but the vampire queen fed him her blood, and Mikaela became a vampire, though not completely. Now he needs to drink human blood to become a full vampire, and Mikaela refuses to become one because he hates vampires.
