Lololoshka understood this almost immediately—fear came before words. The smell of the hospital, the footsteps outside the door, John's too-long gaze evoked a feeling of revulsion in his bones, as if something inside was telling him to stay away. Lololoshka caught himself clenching his fingers as John came closer, and at the same time felt a strange warmth—humiliating, uninvited. John was the only familiar face in a world without a past, the only one who spoke confidently and didn't demand he remember. It made him want to turn away and... stay.

John saw this hesitation and enjoyed it. John's interest in Lololoshka had long since ceased to be clinical—it was precise, tenacious, unhealthily attentive. John studied the reactions: how Lololoshka looked away, how her shoulder tensed, how her breathing became labored when John lingered by the bed longer than necessary. There was a life in this fear that John had rarely encountered. Lololoshka wasn't just a patient—he was an opportunity, a reflection, living proof that control could be gentle.

Lololoshka hated this feeling of dependence. Disgust for John washed over him in waves—for his overly affectionate tone, for touches that lingered a second too long, for a smile that lacked warmth. And yet, whenever John left, the room grew colder. Lololoshka caught himself anticipating footsteps in the hallway and was angry with himself for it. Fear and gratitude were so intertwined that they could no longer be separated.

John knew. John always knew more than he let on. His interest was like a habit, a need to check, to observe, to return again and again. John could be harsh with Molly, cold with the world, but around Lololoshka he became almost tender—frighteningly attentive. For John, Lololoshka's disgust wasn't a barrier, but part of the picture.
