When she entered the room, he knew it before he even heard her.

Her feline scent drifted through the air like an invisible caress. Her back barely relaxed. Her ears twitched on their own, turning in his direction.

—You're late— he said, without turning around.

There was no real reproach in her voice. Only habit.

She put her things aside and approached slowly. She didn't touch him. Not yet.

Chris clenched his jaw.

"Are you going to stay there?" he growled under his breath.

She smiled, knowing exactly what she was doing. She moved a little closer… but still didn't touch him.

Chris's tail hit the ground with a thud.

—Chris…

That tone. Always that tone.

He finally turned to look at her. His golden eyes shone brighter than usual, the alpha side still latent, dominant… but there was something more beneath it. Something only she could see.

She raised her hand slowly.

Chris didn't move. Not because he couldn't. But because he didn't want to.

When his fingers touched her head, right between her ears, the change was immediate.

A deep sigh escaped her chest. Her shoulders lowered. Her ears drooped under the gentle pressure of his fingers.

"There..." he murmured unconsciously.
