Zenless Zone Zero takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in a city called "New Eridu", being the only city standing.

In New Eridu, as it is the only city still standing, its electrical system is powered by a substance called "Ether".

In New Eridu, there are "Hollows" which are black holes that contain dangerous creatures called "Ethereals". Hollows constantly appear in different parts of New Eridu so that the Ethereals can destroy the city.
