Kirby is unable to speak, he only says "Poyo" and makes sounds.

Since both franchises belong to Masahiro Sakurai, Kirby will be in Smash Bros. Kirby has appeared in every Super Smash Bros. game to date. He retains many of the abilities from his own series, such as the ability to inhale his enemies, but some abilities from his games are not included, such as Air Gun and Slide. Additionally, he incorporates copy abilities like Fighter, Backdrop, Suplex, Ninja, Rock, Hammer, and Yo-Yo into his moveset without having to copy them from enemies.

Kirby can inflate and float in this game, but he can only flap his arms six times before it seems as if all the excess air leaves his body and he falls. He cannot float again until he touches the ground. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, along with Jigglypuff and Mr. Game & Watch, Kirby is a character whose appearance is unchanged from Super Smash Bros. Melee.

After Kirby inhales another fighter, he can swallow them by pressing down or B, granting him a hat or costume and the ability to use the swallowed character's neutral special move instead of his own. Most of these abilities contain references to the Copy Abilities Kirby obtains in his games; for example, Bowser's Fire Breath and Charizard's Flamethrower function similarly to the Fire ability, the Ice Climbers' parka resembles the one Kirby uses with the Freeze ability, and ROB's Laser bounces off slopes just like the Laser ability. If Kirby inhales and swallows another Kirby, it only deals minor damage, but if he swallows another Kirby with an ability, he will steal that Kirby's ability.

Kirby's signature technique is inhaling, which he has been using since Kirby's Dream Land. It is available in almost all of Kirby's standard platforming games, except for Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby Mass Attack. The manual for Kirby: Squeak Squad attributes this ability to his "mighty lungs," though Kirby simply opens his mouth and sucks in a large amount of air, much like a vacuum cleaner. Traditionally, Kirby's inhaling has an unlimited duration, but in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, he tires after inhaling for several seconds and has to take a short break. Kirby's Super Inhalation is also introduced in the game, where, after inhaling for about a second, he becomes more powerful and can inhale larger objects. Super Inhalation returns in Kirby: Squeak Squad and becomes even more powerful in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, where he can inhale stone blocks and multiple enemies at once. In the same game, Kirby can inhale other Kirbys to steal their Copy ability. In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby gains an ability called Hypernova by touching a Miracle Fruit, which allows him to inhale objects as large as trees or move stone or metal objects more than twice their size. Hypernova lets him inhale almost anything and expel it. In all games except Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Kirby cannot inhale underwater.

After inhaling something, Kirby can either swallow it or spit it out with a Star Spit attack. Starting with Kirby's Adventure, Kirby gains a Copy Ability if the player chooses to swallow an enemy with a special power, although Kirby cannot speak, only saying "Poyo" and generic phrases.

Kirby is largely innocent and has a cheerful demeanor and positive attitude. [1] He enjoys helping others so much that he sometimes goes to great lengths to do so; in the Dyna Blade subgame of Kirby Super Star Ultra, he single-handedly feeds the Dyna Blade chicks (though he expresses annoyance at the constant noise of the Dyna Blade chicks before dragging them to Whispy Woods to be fed the apples that constantly fall from the tree branches) and teaches them to fly. He has demonstrated a strong sense of justice and will not forgive anyone who poses a danger to those around him, as shown in his final boss battles. Throughout the many dangers he faces, he is remarkably courageous, maintaining a neutral expression almost constantly. This is especially evident in the Subspace Emissary. In the anime, he harbors no ill will toward anyone, not even King Dedede or Escargoon, who mostly cause trouble for themselves, and generally greets everyone he meets.

Although brave and possessing a strong sense of justice, Kirby quickly suspects King Dedede of being behind his mischief, as seen at the beginning of Kirby: Squeak Squad, even going so far as to break into his castle and fight him. In fact, Kirby has consistently displayed impulsive tendencies throughout the series and can be just as quick to start fights as he is to dismiss them, engaging Dedede, Meta Knight, and Dyna Blade on impulse. He also willingly answered Dedede's challenge for a rematch and attacked Shadow Kirby without thinking. This recklessness often gets him into trouble or causes him to create problems (such as when he accidentally released Nightmare). However, in recent games, he seemingly no longer acts impulsively after learning from his mistakes. Kirby also loves food, tomatoes, he can eat huge things and things that are months old, he loves to sleep and eat

Kirby is a small, pink, spherical creature with two stubby arms, two red feet, and two oval eyes with black pupils (with a faint blue tint at the bottom starting in Kirby Super Star, which brightened in later appearances, and then acquired a greenish hue from Kirby and the Forgotten Land onward). Kirby's cheek blushes weren't introduced until his second game, Kirby's Adventure, where they appeared as two lines of black whiskers in the artwork. In subsequent games up to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, they were depicted as three diagonal red lines in the artwork, though they were generally always solid red ovals in-game (except for Kirby's Dream Land 2, where they were missing from his sprite).

Kirby's body is soft and flexible,[1][8] allowing him to flatten or expand like a balloon. He is officially 20 centimeters (8 inches) tall,[1][8] but the Super Smash Bros. games depict him as being about one meter tall compared to other characters, and about half the size of Adeleine, a human from the Kirby series. His weight is unknown,[1] though various parts of the anime and the Super Smash Bros. series suggest that he is light enough to be easily carried.

Kirby has no skeletal structure or teeth. [9] The latter is confirmed in the anime episode "A Dental Dilemma," where Hardy couldn't find Kirby's teeth to clean them. His appearance has subtly changed over the years: his arms and body have become more rounded, and his facial features more defined, with larger eyes. This new design has been used in all subsequent games. Kirby cannot speak words, only a few like "Poyo!"
