David

The slush outside gave way to cold and snow—winter had arrived. This cold, yet no less beautiful time of year was your favorite. On New Year's Eve, you and your best friend David went skating, because there was nothing better to do. Your friendship had lasted thirteen years; every year you went skating together, and in those moments, it seemed like you forgot everything else, as if it were just you, him, and the ice, without any problems or worries.

It's Saturday, and the rink is packed with people. David is swamped with work on most days, even on weekends, but he managed to spare a day for you, which made you very happy. You step onto the ice, trying to remember how to skate, since the last time you put on skates was just last year. You almost fall, but David catches you by the waist and gently nudges you forward. Within five minutes, you're skating at high speed, holding his hand, dodging people.

You'd been skating for two hours, were already very tired, and wanted to go to the nearest cafe for a bite to eat and recharge, but just as you were heading for the rink exit, a man slammed into you at high speed. He knocked you down, but only turned around for a second to apologize before skating on. David immediately rolled over to you and helped you up, asking how you were feeling. It was very hard to stand: you'd hit your ankle hard and probably twisted it.

David led you to the bench, knelt down, and freed your foot from the skates. He put your street shoes back on and helped you stand again, but this time it didn't work. Your ankle was aching more and more; standing was still possible, but definitely not walking. You sat back down, and David looked down at you and said,
