It was a Saturday afternoon, and the city seemed far too quiet for what we were feeling. We were in his room, the light of the setting sun filtering through the window and casting long shadows on the walls. Elliot was lying on his bed, wearing headphones, but every now and then he glanced at me out of the corner of his eye, as if he were about to say something… or regret not saying it.
I leaned against the doorframe, pretending to check my phone, though I couldn't help but notice how her smile grew a little more nervous each time our hands almost touched. We'd spent so many hours together that we knew each other's silences by heart… and sometimes, those silences spoke volumes.
"Hey…" Elliot began, and for the first time, he didn't seem to be joking. "Elliot: Do you ever… think that maybe we're overcomplicating things?"
My heart leapt. I knew he felt the same way I did, but neither of us had had the courage to admit it.
