Lucifer is a slender fallen angel who bears a strong resemblance to his daughter, Charlie: he has fair skin with rosy cheeks, blond hair with fine, light coral streaks over thick, paler blond highlights, and eyes with light yellow sclera and red pupils. He is shorter than his daughter,[5] though not by much.[6] Unlike Charlie, his mouth is full of sharp teeth, his hair is cut short and slicked back in a ducktail with a single tuft sticking out, his pupils are wide like a snake's, and his cheeks are a paler shade of red. He also has sharp black eyebrows, light purple eyelids, and a forked tongue. Lucifer's white and red attire resembles that of a circus ringmaster: he wears a wide-brimmed white hat with a golden snake and red apple above golden spikes resembling a crown, and a white suit with red lining, red trim, and eight gold buttons. The coat is worn over a light red-and-white striped vest with two gold buttons and a small black bow tie with accessories. In the episode "The Show Must Go On," his suit has red and gold epaulettes, reminiscent of a ringmaster's. He also wears black knee-high heeled boots and dark gray forearm-length gloves. He wears a gold ring on his left pinky, presumably the wedding ring from his marriage to Lilith. Lucifer usually carries a black cane with an apple tip, matching his hat. Due to his angelic origins, he has six white wings with red feathers.

In the photo of Lucifer and Frederick von Eldritch, Lucifer is dressed similarly to Charlie in the pilot episode: a pale red jacket with black lapels and a shirt with dark red cuffs. He also wore a wide-brimmed white hat with a snake, an apple, and golden spikes resembling a crown, but he was missing his dark gray gloves.

When Lucifer assumes his full demonic form, he develops a pair of red horns with a fiery sphere between them, and a snake and apple from his hat hover above them, resembling a halo. His eyes also change: the sclera turns red, and the pupils turn yellow. A black, spiky tail, ending in a triangular tip with a red heart in the center, also becomes visible, and the tips of his fingers change color to red. Furthermore, his entire body begins to emit a white glow.

He viewed his daughter's desire to save the souls of sinners with a fair amount of cynicism. He himself had tried to reason with the denizens of Hell, but had failed, and he didn't want Charlie to suffer the same fate. He reminded her that Heaven had turned a deaf ear to his pleas and didn't want her to endure the same trials. Nevertheless, Charlie managed to convince him to arrange a meeting in Heaven, and Lucifer's heart glimmered with hope that her endeavor would succeed. Protecting his daughter, Lucifer transformed into a formidable seraph. He directly threatened Charlie's bodyguards, Razzle and Dazzle, with reprisals if anything happened to his daughter. And when Alastor chided him for his indifference to Charlie, for being a bad father and not supporting his daughter in her aspirations, implying that he had taken his place in her life, Lucifer made no secret of his jealousy. He saw Alastor as a rival for his daughter's affections, and he was plagued by doubts about the strength of their father-daughter bond. In the episode "The Show Must Go On," he arrived to Charlie's aid, albeit belatedly, repelling an attack by Adam and the exorcists. When Adam attempted to attack them from behind, Lucifer instinctively shielded his daughter, unleashing a barrage of taunts and blows on his adversary. Under the weight of angry reproaches, Lucifer beat Adam half to death, stopping only when he heard Charlie's voice.

Sadly, Lucifer was far from ideal as a father. He loved Charlie, but, consumed by his own struggles, he rarely thought about his daughter. He called when he was bored or needed help. He was naturally overjoyed when he learned Charlie was planning a meeting with Heaven, but he had completely forgotten what she was doing or where she was, even though Charlie had told him about her "Hazbin Hotel" project just a few months earlier. He hadn't even suspected her connection with Vaggie. Lucifer, alas, showed no interest in his daughter's life and kept in touch. Their childhood closeness, when he inspired her to find her own path, remained only a vague memory. As King of Hell, Lucifer ruled wisely—meaning, he interfered virtually without interfering in the lives of his subjects. As a result, his name (and, by extension, Charlie's) carried little weight in the Underworld. The denizens of Hell, of course, acknowledged his power, but they felt little awe, knowing that nothing would compel their overlord to interfere in their affairs. Lucifer himself viewed sinners with disdain, considering them "cruel, destructive psychopaths obsessed with causing as much pain and destruction as possible." "Scum," he would say dismissively, not believing in their redemption. And yet, at times, his words tinged with bitter regret that the free will granted to them had led to such tragic consequences. As revealed in the episode "The Puppeteer," Lucifer had been absent from Hell's affairs for so long that his throne in the courthouse was covered in cobwebs. Due to his absence, Satan assumed the role of Hell's supreme ruler, allowing him to lie with impunity, claiming to be the true king of Hell and to have ruled it long before Lucifer's arrival.

Lucifer, though he sat on the throne of Hell, remained a connoisseur of dramatic gestures and mise-en-scène. Like a seasoned actor, he juggled caustic jokes and theatrical sighs, effortlessly shifting from playful carelessness to melancholy. He was ambitious, as was his daughter, Charlie—both fervently believed in their own ideals, albeit rather idiosyncratic. In the tattered book "History of Hell," which Charlie pored over in the episode "Overture," Lucifer was portrayed as a dreamer and idealist whose urge to grant humanity free will ultimately resulted in the creation of Hell. Cast down from Heaven, he gave himself over to grief and disillusionment. After parting with Lilith, Lucifer withdrew into himself, finding solace in collecting rubber duckies. This passion, unfortunately, alienated him from his daughter: Charlie's calls became rare, and he convinced himself that she didn't need him. At times, Lucifer's carelessness in judgment and actions was astonishing, as if he were not the Lord of Hell but a simple-minded demon. During an argument with Adam, for example, his threat sounded like an ambiguous hint, amusing even Adam. He completely ignored Charlie's remark. When meeting Vaggie, he persistently called her "Maggie," as if he'd forgotten her true name. And this, despite all his greatness! However, Lucifer felt awkward in company. Wanting to connect with his daughter, he passionately exclaimed that they both liked girls! However, don't be fooled by his apparent awkwardness: Lucifer is not one to back down from a challenge. He fearlessly charged into battle with Adam, showering his opponent with caustic taunts, reminding him of his fiasco with Lilith, and hinting at his affair with Eve. He was a master of intimidation—remember how he ordered Lute to "take her 'little friends' and get out of here," adding "please"—a nod to his innate aristocracy.

Lucifer can play many instruments very well, including the violin, which he plays "phenomenally well." However, according to VivziePop, his favorite instrument is something else, something that would be fun based on the very specific voice actor who would be cast to voice Lucifer, someone they tailored the character of Lucifer to.[15] Faustisse may have been referring to the voice actor (and instrument) in question when they said Lucifer sounds like Weird Al Yankovic.[Note 16] Lucifer has a huge collection of rubber duckies, which he adores.[16] Lucifer also has a photograph of himself hugging someone who looks like a young Frederick von Eldritch. The trailer for the first season showed a shot in which Lucifer can be seen with three pairs of wings. In the episode "Overture", it was revealed that Lucifer has been running Hell for the past seven years, as Lilith has not been in charge of it. On the stream, Vivziepop mentioned that if Alastor and Lucifer met, Alastor would like Lucifer due to his similarities to Willy Wonka in his love of "showing off".[17] In the episode "The Show Must Go On," Lucifer said to Adam, "Well, your first wife seemed to like what I had to offer, or did your second, boo-boo-boo," with some ambiguous gestures, hinting that Lucifer may have slept with Eve. He is the only one of the Seven Deadly Sins whose origins have been confirmed as being born in Paradise. In an interview in mid-2024, Vivienne confirmed that Charlie and Lucifer Morningstar can travel through the Circles of Hell.[18] In a late 2024 interview, Vivienne explained her idea for Lucifer as the mythological Lucifer, the arrogant and most handsome angel; she wanted to create a Taylor Barnum-type leader, where Lucifer would be overly ambitious and kind of delusional about what he could do, but had a really inventive imagination and a very handsome appearance.[19]

The Faustisse believe that the dynamic of Lucifer and Lilith can be summed up by the phrase "Behind every man there is a greater woman"[Note 4], and that they love each other very much.[Note 5] They describe Lucifer and Lilith as "passionate, trashy lovers."[Note 6] They are of the opinion that Lilith "wears the pants" in her family[Note 7], but believe that both Lucifer and Lilith switch positions in their intimate lives.[Note 8] When VivziePop first discussed Lucifer, who was only referred to as "The Devil" at the time, VivziePop was hesitant to reveal much about the inspiration, citing concerns about future spoilers. However, she did mention that Charlie's father is "very silly and frivolous," emphasizing his love of polka music,[12] something also mentioned by Faustise.[Note 9][Note 2] Lucifer is below Charlie and Lilith.[13] Lucifer owns a theme park called Lu Lu World.[14] There is also a themed attraction with him in Lu Lu's World called "Fun House". Faustisse do not think that Lucifer cut off his wings when he fell.[Note 10] VivziePop and Faustisse believe that Lucifer is much stronger than Alastor.[15][Note 11] Faustisses do not think that Lucifer cares about his subjects.[Note 12] They describe Hell as an oligarchy, and say that Lucifer is not very politically active in the traditional sense, but only serves to maintain the status quo of power.[Note 13] The Faustisse also hinted that Lucifer may be helping coordinate the exterminations, though they did not say how or why this might be.[Note 14] The Faustisse believe that Lucifer is not the best father, but he still truly loves Charlie.[Note 15]

Lucifer's name means "shining one," "morning star," or "light-giver" in Latin. One of these translations corresponds to his surname, Morningstar.[9] The apple symbolism is a reference to Adam and Eve from the Old Testament. A demon, transformed into a serpent, tempted Eve to taste the forbidden fruit (which in popular culture is often identified with an apple). According to Faustisse, Lucifer's favorite snack is caramel-dipped apples. Charlie inherited her features (yellowish whites of her eyes, pink cheeks and fingers) from her father. Lucifer's phone has a childhood photo of her as Charlie's contact. Apparently, Lucifer still loves Lilith, as he still wears his wedding ring on his left hand, which can be seen in the painting in Lucifer's room, as well as in episodes 5 and 8. Lucifer in Christian mythology is a fallen Archangel who attempted to conquer heaven in the Great War before being cast underground, where he became the ruler of Hell and an adversary of God. In some versions, the devil has multiple names, including Lucifer and Satan. In "Hazbin Hotel," Lucifer and Satan are separate characters.[10] This is also implied in the pilot episode of "Hellboss," where a homeless demon is seen holding a sign that reads "Satan Bless." Furthermore, Lucifer represents the sin of Pride, while Satan represents the sin of Wrath. Lucifer existed before the creation of Earth and humanity itself, making him one of the oldest beings of Hell shown in the animated series. Many paintings on the hotel walls depict the Morningstar family alongside other dark-gray, green-eyed demons. These are the von Eldritch family. Vivienne refers to one of the demons as "Lucifer's good friend." Lucifer maintains a neutral position, he divides sinners into the weak and the strong, and he does not allow the weak to come near him. He tries to prevent strong and weak sinners from uniting and starting a rebellion, or worse, a revolution, since many sinners have their own ideology.

Life Manipulation: Lucifer has the ability to give life to inanimate objects, such as bringing Razzle and Dazzle to life, who were originally just Charlie dolls.

Musical talent: Lucifer can play musical instruments, such as the violin. He is also a good singer.[7] Instrumental Talent: Lucifer has proven himself to be a fairly skilled violinist during his musical duet with Alastor. Lucifer has also demonstrated a rudimentary ability to play the accordion.

Demonic Transformation: Lucifer has a common trait that every other demon has, which is the ability to easily transform into a full demon form and back to his default form. Flight: According to Faustisse, Lucifer and his daughter can summon their wings to fly.[Note 3] Charlie's ability to fly was not shown in the series. Angelic Powers: According to Vivienne, as a fallen angel, Lucifer has very strong angelic powers that dominate the demonic powers of his contemporaries.[2] Portal Creation: In Episode 5, it was shown that Lucifer can create portals to other places and locations. Pyrokinesis: Lucifer can create and control fire. This ability was shown in episode five. Hydrokinesis: Lucifer throws a yellow liquid at Alastor during the song Best Dad Ever. Duplication: Lucifer can create multiple copies of himself. Teleportation: Lucifer can teleport to any location by covering himself in a shiny red mist. Transfiguration: According to the book "History of Hell", Lucifer briefly took the form of a snake. He also transforms into many other animals during his battle with Adam in episode eight. Object Creation: Lucifer seems to be able to create almost anything he desires with a simple wave of his hand. This includes, but is not limited to, clothing, dolls, tools, large fountains of champagne, and mountains of caviar.
