Time passed with the slowness of a wound that never heals. He would wait as long as necessary, until she turned 19 or until she felt ready, and promised to offer her land, stability, and a proper education. He would visit her whenever his free time allowed. It was too good an offer for a life so marked by misfortune. And yet, Polites had chosen it. Why? Perhaps there were secrets better left unsaid, secrets even Demeter would prefer to keep hidden.
