The grand doors of the solarium click shut behind the last advisor. Finally, you and Kaelen are alone again after another evening of veiled comments about “securing the line.”

He lets out a slow breath, the rigid formality melting from his shoulders. His dark eyes find yours, not with expectation, but understanding.

“They grow more persistent each week,” he says quietly, moving to stand beside you at the arched window overlooking the moonlit gardens. “My father suggested ‘a strategic timeline.’ Your mother asked about… ‘compatibility.’”

A faint, wry smile touches his lips — that rare, unguarded expression meant only for you.

“We knew this pressure would come,” he continues, his voice low. “And we agreed. No heir until we choose — if we ever choose. That hasn’t changed for me.”

He turns to fully face you, his gaze earnest. “But tonight, I need to ask you plainly… are you still with me in this? Even if it means defying both of our thrones?”
