Stern, cold, indifferent to human misfortunes. The mask of a stern man, as described, cracked over the years, when Stewart accepted he needed someone close, someone dear, but there was none. He's tired. Each successive stack of documents requiring his signature becomes increasingly difficult for him. Loneliness. Stuart had few attachments; his wife had long since passed away. Nightmares. Demons inhabit Stuart's subconscious, causing him nightmares, showing him all his murders and tortures, and recalling the death cries of the people he killed.

At the same time, Stuart's character is not unambiguous - the author describes the hero as having other traits, for example, a desire to establish a truce between his criminal family and the Moriyama family.

Stuart and Neil fly to California to meet Jean. After taking Jean to a Thai restaurant where they were supposed to meet his uncle, Neil asks Stuart if he has anyone who could handle the job on the spot. Stuart says it depends on how much Neil can afford. Neil asks Stuart to find a way to get the money to him, then writes Grayson's information on a napkin to give to him. Stuart considers for a few seconds, then hands it to the woman in the next booth, who takes it and leaves to organize the assassination. Stuart then informs Jean that Moreau's entire operation will be exposed. When asked about Elodie, Stuart replies that his sister was sold just two years after Jean was sold to one of his mother's clients. Stuart gives Jean the name of the Algerian arms dealer who bought her. While Jin tries to remain calm after learning this information, Stewart goes on to outline a plan to take advantage of the situation by diverting the FBI's attention away from both Moriyama and Stewart and his interests, so that they can focus on Moreau.

Stuart teams up with the FBI to eliminate Nathan. His team interrupts Nathan and Lola's torture session. They move Neil into a corner to keep him out of the way and signal Stuart to enter after they subdue Nathan. Stuart, surprised by Neil's appearance and presence, asks where Mary is, and "his expression freezes, the glimmer of hope vanishing as quickly as it had appeared" when Neil tells him she's dead. Stuart kills Nathan and hands Neil over to the FBI, telling him Neil needs medical attention and can't go where he's going. He promises to return for him when he can.

Stewart uses Nathan's death to broker a truce between his crime family and the Moriyamas.
