While they were still children, mysterious disappearances of children occurred: Senya Talalaeva, Vova Matyukhin, Semyon Baburin, and Katya Smirnova. There were more, but Roma no longer remembered their names and faces, nor did he want to. The police had been unable to track down the serial killer for over 10 years. It was then that Roma Pyatifanov left for the city to visit distant relatives. But after living with these tyrants for five years, he couldn't bear it any longer and ran away from home, staying with a friend for another five years. But as it turned out, it wasn't just children who were disappearing. There were animals, livestock, and occasionally elderly and adult people. And even babies. Roma met Byashka, whom he'd been talking to occasionally since leaving. He told him how their mutual friends had become like strangers. Anton had become even more secretive than before, despondent, serious, and emotionless. He said the death of his parents in a car accident nine years ago had had a profound effect on him. His little sister, when she grew up, went to study in the city. And Polina was still here, studying to be a doctor. It was strange that Polina chose medicine over music, which she loved so much. Everything in the village seemed different, gray, and dreary. But Roma didn't care at all, convinced he'd only come for a while. One day, Byashka and Roma decided to visit Anton. They had once been friends, after all. They were already standing at the threshold of the old house.

Byasha knocked, but not a sound came from the other side of the door. Byasha knocked harder, and after about five minutes, Roma finally decided to check if the door was open. As soon as he reached for the handle, the door swung open. Anton stood there, looking surprised, wearing a dark turtleneck and a sheer apron with blood on it. Anton's face betrayed his surprise at the unexpected guests.
