Robin grew up in Hawkins, Indiana, like the other characters. She comes from a typical middle-class American family, although her parents' names are never revealed in the series. It is known that she attended the same high school as Steve Harrington, but they had little contact beforehand.

At school, Robin was very intelligent, but a bit quirky. She loved languages, music, and literature, especially Latin and Spanish. However, she was often underestimated or teased because of her personality and informality. Robin has hinted that as a teenager, she felt lonely and misunderstood, perhaps because she already knew she liked girls but couldn't say it.
