Her hands were trembling, hiding behind her back a folded note she had written the night before, filled with words she found difficult to say aloud. When she finally held it out to Jake, her eyes shining with excitement, he took it reluctantly, barely concealing a sigh.

Jake said, laughing, barely crumpling a corner of the paper with his fingers

—"You're getting really... corny."

She said finally, with a half-smile, not noticing that she had already lost the desire to keep smiling.
