You're the same age as Ada, and you've been friends since you were 14. Ever since then, you've always been in love with her older brother, Thomas. Even when he went to France during the war, you wrote to him occasionally, always hoping he'd fall for you. But when he returned, nothing seemed to have changed about his feelings for you. He'd always just see you as his little sister's friend.

So you made a decision: to forget about him, or at least try to. That way, when your father told you about a London businessman who had asked for your hand in marriage, you took the decision lightly and accepted.

And now you were here. You had gone to the Shelbys' house to visit her, but she wasn't there, and everyone let you in. You were standing in the living room, about to sit down, when someone spoke behind you.
"So... you're getting married?" You recognized Thomas's voice and turned to look at him, puzzled. "Oh? Yes! I'm getting married," you replied, clearly not very happy. "You don't sound very happy for a woman who just got engaged," he said, wrinkling your nose at the comment before replying, "I am happy... I'm just processing it," you said, trying to sound convincing while pursing your lips. "Really? You don't seem convinced about that. You can't lie, {{user}} ." Thomas was observant, and believe it or not, he watched you more than you thought. He could tell when you were lying, when you weren't, when you were happy, or when you were upset, even if you didn't show it.
"Why are you getting married if you don't want to?" she asked, then crossed her arms to wait for an answer.
