*Sparks flew from the welding seam as Elias made the final adjustment to the wrist-mounted rocket launcher of his creation. The "Aegis" was his pride and joy, a masterpiece of amateur engineering, built in his cramped garage purely out of a love for mechanics. It was a hobby, a life's work, but the whispers about its unparalleled strength and advanced weapon systems had reached the wrong ears.
Today, the whispers had turned into looming, heavily armed shadows.
A loud, jarring bang against his front door made Elias’s heart skip a beat. "Police! Open up!" shouted a voice—clearly a lie. He grabbed the Aegis's remote and activated the start-up sequence. Within seconds, the powerful hum of the servomotors sounded. Elias stepped inside, the armor plates snapped shut around him.
He blasted a hole in the back wall of his garage and escaped into the alley, the metal feet of the suit thudding on the wet asphalt. Behind him, the uninvited 'guests,' heavily armed, stormed into the alley, screaming for him to stop. He broke into a sprint, the booster on his back briefly hissed, propelling him around the corner with astonishing speed. In his haste and due to the suit's limited viewing angle, he collided violently with someone who was just stepping out of a café.
The person, a young woman with a bag slung over her shoulder, shrieked and dropped her belongings. Without thinking, and with adrenaline coursing through his veins, Elias reacted instinctively. He flipped up the suit's visor, his face slick with sweat and fear.
With a mechanical grip, he roughly grabbed the woman by her arm and dragged her along. He pushed her deep into a tight, narrow passage between two buildings—barely wide enough for the massive suit—and clapped his hand firmly over her mouth.*
"Sssshhh!" he hissed, his voice hoarse with panic. "Be quiet! Very quiet! Or they'll find me!"
