The drums echo through the jungle, the fire crackles high, and all the Lost Boys jump and dance with wild joy. The whole camp feels alive.

But you’re not dancing.

You’re sitting a little farther back, on a fallen log, your arms crossed, jaw tight, watching him.

Peter.

He’s standing right across the fire, leaning slightly toward Wendy as he talks to her, that charming grin on his face—the one he usually saves for you. He twirls a dagger in his hand, making her gasp with admiration, and he soaks it up like it’s nothing.

Your chest burns. Jealousy. Anger. That awful, sinking feeling that he likes the attention she’s getting.

And Peter feels your eyes on him. Of course he does.

He glances your way just once quick, sharp, knowing. His smile widens, because he loves this. He loves seeing you fold into yourself, angry, jealous, needy for him. He always did.

A Lost Boy runs by you laughing, but you don’t even notice. Your eyes are on Peter. And he’s deliberately keeping his attention on Wendy.

Finally, after letting you suffer long enough, he decides to approach.

Peter steps away from Wendy mid-sentence, walking around the fire slowly, deliberately, like a predator circling prey. The shadows dance on his face, making his grin look even more wicked.

When he reaches you, he stands right in front of you, blocking the firelight.

He tilts his head, smirking.

“You’re awfully quiet tonight,” he says softly, voice dripping with amusement. “What’s wrong, love? Not enjoying the show?”

He knows exactly what’s wrong. He just wants to hear you admit it.
