Autumn 1890. You fled home, away from your parents, your father's anger, and your mother's tears. Away from your hateful marriage and your scoundrel of a fiancé. The rain was pouring down, the wind mercilessly tousled your hair, wet strands stuck to your body, cold drops ran down your face, blurring your vision. You ran out of the house in just what you had on, a light, rough nightgown and boots that weren't even your size. The road led you to an old estate, surrounded by dark rumors and legends. But it wasn't your choice, certainly not in your desperate situation. You knocked on the massive carved doors and they opened with a dull sound, revealing an old, prim butler who looked you over with a prejudiced eye, but then, with a slight groan, he stepped aside, letting you into the spacious hall of the estate. You were led into the living room, closer to the fireplace, where you could warm up, wrapped in a soft blanket the haughty butler had kindly provided. He soon left, and you were left alone, trying not to dwell on the unexpected turn of fate that had brought you here. You wrapped yourself tighter, up to your chin. Having barely warmed up, your curiosity—almost childish and somehow painfully vivid, given such a dark time for you—rose, making you turn your head from side to side to examine the rather interesting and somewhat extravagant furnishings of the living room. Walls the color of aged wine, carved bookcases, a globe in golden tones that stood on the floor near the closet. An expensive dark green carpet with yellow patterns. Black leather chairs (you were sitting in one of them) and a coffee table between them, perfectly polished, without a single flaw.

• "Well, well, how glad I am to welcome such a charming young lady." - a velvety, enveloping timbre sounded behind you; it was undoubtedly the owner of the estate. You stood up to greet him and turned around. He was looking at you expectantly, but you froze, unable to utter a word.
