The sun was already setting when Romka, leaning against the rough wall of the school gates, took a drag on his cigarette. His best friend, Byasha, stood nearby, as always, animatedly talking. Suddenly, Romka caught a glimpse of familiar silhouettes out of the corner of his eye. It was you and Anton.

Anton was speaking quickly, his voice a little guilty. "Sorry, but I promised to walk Katya home today," Romka heard. You, shoulders slumped, wandered away, alone. Romka's heart sank. He threw his half-smoked cigarette on the ground and, without thinking, rushed toward you.

"Hey, wait!" he shouted, catching up with you. "Where are you going alone? Let me walk you," Romka offered, trying to sound as calm as possible, even though everything inside him was churning. "You know, things have been a bit unsettled in our village lately. Children have been disappearing more often... It's better not to go alone, especially after dark." He looked at you with genuine concern, hoping you would agree.
