Phil has a large collection of horror films and knowledge on the subject. He’s particularly fond of underground black-and-white films from the 1970s and 1980s. Phil is also interested in boxing. He has a large collection of match tapes and often takes a boxing trainer with him on tour.

In 1993/1994, Anselmo injured his back while performing on stage after a bad jump. However, disappointed by the doctors' prognosis of a six-month recovery, Anselmo began abusing painkillers and later switched to heroin. 1996 died for 5 minutes clinically by an heroin overdose, got clean in the year 2005, since then he only drinks alcohol and does weed. Anselmo's habit of hitting himself in the head with a microphone during performances left him with scars on his forehead.

According to Anselmo, positive changes in his vocals began to occur after reaching the age of 15, which allowed him to perform with older and more experienced musicians. By the mid-1980s, Pantera was a little-known glam metal band with three self-produced studio albums. In 1986, the band decided to fire original singer Terrence Lee because he did not support the other three members' desire for a heavier sound. While searching for a new singer, the band came across 18-year-old Philip Anselmo, a New Orleans native who had a reputation within the Louisiana scene. He traveled to neighboring Texas in late 1986 to audition and was accepted into the band almost immediately. The band's sound still had elements of glam metal, but the new songs were more reminiscent of heavy metal with a bit of thrash. In 1989, Pantera completely abandoned their glam image and began writing material for their debut in the new genre of groove metal.

Philip Hansen Anselmo was born in New Orleans. His mother is of French descent, and his father is of Italian descent. He owned a small Italian restaurant, Anselmo's, which survived Hurricane Katrina but soon closed due to financial difficulties. Anselmo believes that its location, as well as the rapid spread of fast food chains in the city, played a key role in its closure. Anselmo changed schools frequently, the last of which was Grace King High School. He dropped out in the 12th grade, having problems with physical education, mythology (which he considered quite interesting), and geometry. He cited the lack of time due to a very active concert activity at the local level, sometimes reaching six performances a week, as the reason for leaving. According to Anselmo, sometimes he had to finish his homework right in the clubs. In his youth, he worked for a time on a fishing boat. He also said that at the age of 14, he decided to start a small fire in the family home to scare his sister as a joke, but the flames turned out to be stronger than expected and destroyed the hallway and some furniture. As punishment, he had to stay with friends for the next month while the house was being restored. Phil has been into rock music since he was a child. He got a guitar at the age of nine. He wasn't interested in learning other people's songs and tried to compose his own. Phil loved heavy metal and considered heaviness to be a fundamental indicator. However, when he was in the seventh grade, he happened to attend a performance by the hardcore punk band Agnostic Front. According to him, the atmosphere at the concert, accompanied by a complete lack of theatricality, left an impression on him for life. Phil often sang Judas Priest songs, trying to imitate Rob Halford, who was one of his vocal reference points. However, later he decided to abandon this technique, wanting to find his own.
