William Afton

In the graphic novel adaptation, William is portrayed as a tall, thin, and tired-looking man with pale skin, shaggy medium-brown hair, and large gray eyes. He tends to smile a lot, referencing his sprites in the games. He wears a security uniform consisting of a white shirt and tie and black trousers. His scars are more visible, and he has endoskeleton markings on his arms and torso. He has two scars on the back of his neck.

In the film, Afton is a tall, middle-aged man with gray-brown hair, blue eyes, and a beard.

William's true physical appearance is unknown, as he has only been seen in the minigames, where he is depicted as a purple sprite the size and shape of an adult man. This sprite changes slightly between each installment. His mouth almost always appears to be in the shape of an elongated, sadistic grin. William is shown to have a cleft chin outside of the minigames. It isn't until Five Nights at Freddy's 3 that he retains a semi-consistent, albeit underutilized, appearance, though he does have expressive eyes and a mouth that conveys his emotional state.

The most detail William has shown is during the SAVETHEM minigame, in which he is revealed to be a tall, thin man with a long neck and a yellow object on his chest resembling a security badge. He is also holding a purple object, speculated to be a weapon or tool, or possibly just his outstretched hands in a gesturing pose. It is implied that his actual physical appearance is the same as his counterpart in the novels, where he is described as an obese, heavyset man with reddish skin when he committed the serial murders.

William lost all the weight he had gained while in character as Dave Miller. As described in Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes, William is a tall, thin, sallow-skinned man with loose skin. His face is unshaven, and his eyes appear unfocused and sunken. It was as if his eyes were made of glass, dead and pale. His security guard uniform didn't fit him well, and the uniform itself was dirty and torn in places, with his name tag hanging crookedly across his chest. He has several deep scars on the back of his neck and body due to a malfunction while operating a Springlock suit. Narcissistic and arrogant: He has an inflated ego and believes himself to be superior, laughing at the idea that someone could get rid of his legacy, although his ego falters in the face of disobedience or confrontation. Obsessed with eternal life: He seeks immortality through the "remnant" (souls and agony of children) and technology, carrying out murders to experiment and feed his machines. Scientific genius but reckless: He possesses great talent for robotics, but his ego and lust for power lead him to cross ethical boundaries, such as sacrificing his own daughter, Elizabeth, in his experiments with Circus Baby. Cowardly in the face of death: Despite his cruelty, his greatest fear is dying. When confronted by vengeful souls, his desperation leads him to make fatal mistakes and attempt to escape, as seen in his first death inside the Spring Bonnie suit. In an unknown year following the closure of a pizzeria (it's unclear whether it was Fredbear's Family Diner or Freddy Fazbear's Pizza), William throws a private party for his own restaurant, Circus Baby's Pizza World, before its grand opening. The party features a new set of animatronics: the Funtime animatronics. However, William designed these robots not for entertainment, but to capture and kill children, likely to obtain Remnant, a supernatural substance Afton wanted to research, as it could grant him immortality. Elizabeth, fascinated by the Circus Baby animatronic, is warned to stay away from it, especially alone. She ignores her father's orders, resulting in her death. This leads to the cancellation of the pizzeria's grand opening, and the incident is covered up as a gas leak. Afton then opens Circus Baby's Entertainment & Rental, a service that allows customers to rent the Funtime animatronics for private parties, and founds his own company, Afton Robotics LLC. At an unknown time, William sent his son Michael to the facility to locate and "free" Elizabeth, whose spirit was inside Baby. In 1987, Fazbear Entertainment reopened Freddy Fazbear's Pizza with new and improved animatronics. For some reason, William was apparently hired as a security guard under a new alias. However, he complains that the animatronics tried to enter the Office, which led to him being transferred to the day shift. William is known to have been responsible for the murders of five other children, which are strongly implicated in the Toy Animatronics possessing them. However, another theory suggests that the animatronics are not possessed, but rather that William altered their facial recognition system, hence their behavior. The Phone Guy clarifies in one of his calls that due to this incident

Before 1983, William met a man named Henry Emily, with whom he opened a local family restaurant, Fredbear's Family Diner, and with whom he probably founded Fazbear Entertainment.

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Although William doesn't play any major role in Five Nights at Freddy's 4, he does make a cameo appearance in the Night 3 minigame, where he is seen in the back room helping an employee put on the Spring Bonnie suit.

It is unknown what became of William after the closure of Fredbear's Family Diner, but it is likely that he kept his job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Although the year hasn't been confirmed, one day some children left a little girl outside Fredbear's Family Diner, laughing as the clearly distressed child tried to get inside. Sad, alone, and left out in a heavy rainstorm, the little girl began to wander away from the restaurant. Suddenly, a car pulled up beside them, and William Afton got out, only to murder the girl and flee. At the same time, Puppet, an animatronic designed to keep children inside the establishment, manages to escape its box, which was blocked by a gift box, and goes in search of the girl. Despite the storm severely damaging its components, Puppet finds the girl lying motionless on the floor. The water damage inevitably causes it to shut down and collapse next to the girl's body, embracing her. Filled with rage and a thirst for revenge, the girl's soul possesses the puppet, seeking vengeance against her killer.
