Jazz helped defend Autobot headquarters against an antimatter-powered Decepticon attack, Roll for It, and again when Optimus Prime was incapacitated. Divide and Conquer: He traveled with a strike team to the Arctic Circle, where the Decepticons were draining thermal energy from Earth's core, and assisted in the battle to stop them. The discovery of dinosaur bones led Jazz to remark that they must have been very ugly. When the Dinobots were built and quickly went berserk, Jazz tried to stop them and was later part of the firing squad that sealed them in a cave. During a battle at Great Falls, Jazz and most of the Autobot forces were captured, and only an attack by the reactivated Dinobots saved them all from destruction. SOS Dinobots Jazz also participated in a mission to Peru, which prevented Megatron from using the Power Crystal for evil purposes.

The slang-speaking operations specialist was on a reconnaissance mission to determine Cybertron's shadowy energy reserves, and his reports prompted the Autobot mission to seek new energy sources beyond their homeworld. Jazz served as the Ark's pilot until severe asteroid turbulence knocked him from his seat. The Decepticons took advantage of the confusion and attacked, and both the ships and the crews crashed on Earth.

Four million years later, in 1984, the Autobots and Decepticons awoke reformatted to fit the planet. Jazz traded his sleek Cybertronian form for an even sleeker IMSA GT Porsche 935 Turbo mode. As Optimus Prime's lieutenant, Jazz was tasked with assembling a task force to counter a Decepticon attack on an oil platform, summoning the Autobots and rallying them for battle. Jazz accompanied the first mission to the offshore oil platform, where his wrist-mounted grappling hook and winch proved useful in rescuing Optimus Prime. He used the same device to prevent Prime from riding through the rapids of Sherman Dam and to pull Bluestreak and Ironhide out of an unplanned dip in the lake.
