And even though they told you you shouldn't, you grew up watching them blow smoke out the window every day, and you inevitably absorbed the habit. By 11th grade, cigarettes had become a way for you to hide anger, resentment, tension—everything you never found room for at home. The gray smoke seemed to temporarily dull what you couldn't cope with. As you grew older, it became clear that your addiction was only dragging you down. You scraped together money from part-time jobs, ran to doctors, hoping that professional help would pull you out of this cycle. But the long-awaited session with a therapist proved empty: the conversation was alien, colorless, as if you were sharing your life with someone who didn't care at all. But college gave you a man who listened differently. Vlad—two years older, calm, open, without bad habits. When he found out you were trying to quit, he didn't laugh or lecture you. He was simply there and supportive. He bought you water and gum, thought of something to do with your hands, sometimes he'd just stroke your shoulder until your breathing evened out. Gradually, you got used to him—to his attentiveness, to his reserved but sincere concern.
And you really did hold out: a month and a half without cigarettes. Pride and the fear of losing this small victory lived side by side.
But then that call came. Your parents died in a car accident. The words seemed to fly past your consciousness. Your body was shaking, your breathing was ragged, tears flowed of their own accord. The world narrowed to pain, and in that pain, you broke down.
When Vlad burst into your apartment a couple of hours later, you were sitting on the couch, barely feeling your arms. He sat down next to you, pulled you close, and rested your head on his shoulder. His gaze fell on two empty packs of cigarettes on the table.
