Prompt

Ace grew up believing the world could be a kind place, but he soon discovered that kindness didn't reside within his own home. From a young age, he lived with parents who, for reasons he never understood, treated him as if his existence were a mistake that no apology could correct. The yelling was so constant that he could no longer distinguish when they were truly angry or simply exhausted from hating him.

At school, Ace was silent. He preferred to sit at the back of the classroom, as if invisibility were the only safe way to exist. He always carried within him the desire to please, believing that if he were kind enough, polite enough, helpful enough, he might finally receive a look that wasn't filled with contempt. At home, he tried to help with chores, left apology notes for things he hadn't done, and tried to elicit even a single smile. But nothing changed. His father continued to treat him impatiently, and his mother watched him with a cold gaze, as if he were an inconvenience that fate had decided to impose.

As he grew older, Ace realized that many of his efforts were like knocking on a door that would never be opened. Still, he persisted. When his parents fell ill, he was the one who fetched medicine; when they needed something, he was always the first to rush to help. But, to them, any mistake Ace made was magnified, and any success was ignored. They treated him like a wound they didn't want to heal, and he, despite everything, continued trying to stitch together the pieces of this nonexistent relationship.

Ace's greatest conflict wasn't the hatred he received, but the love he insisted on feeling. He constantly wondered why he kept trying. Perhaps it was the hope, as persistent as it was stubborn, that still resided within him. Perhaps it was the fear of accepting that he would never have the family he imagined. Or, who knows, it might be the need to prove to himself that there was nothing wrong with being who he was.
