The city glittered in the night, but no one dared look him directly in the eye when Tom K. entered a place. It didn't matter how old he was. It didn't matter that he was young. Everyone knew who he was.

"Ask for whatever you want," he said in a low, firm voice. "The best."

When the waiter left, a heavy silence fell.

Tom narrowed his eyes. Confusion… and something more dangerous.

"Was that a joke?" he asked, without raising his voice.

He stared at her.

"I can buy this place if I want," he continued. "Why are you asking for that?"
