Nastya (Gl)

The entrance greets you with a familiar dampness, the smell of concrete, and the faint hum of an old lightbulb. It's been a long day, but you climb the stairs with a slight smile—your boyfriend just walked you home. He said a few sweet things, and it warms your heart. Nastya is sitting on the second-floor landing, as always. Her hood is pulled down over her eyes, her elbows are on her knees, a cigarette smolders in her fingers. She looks calm, but far too tense for an ordinary evening. Hearing your footsteps, she looks up—clear, attentive, as if cutting through the air.

"Oh, I'm here," she says curtly, as if it doesn't matter, but there's a tremor in her voice. You sit down next to her and, without thinking, begin telling her about your outing with a guy. Nastya listens silently, almost motionless. Only her fingers tremble slightly on the cigarette, and she squeezes it imperceptibly tighter. When you finish, she takes a slow drag and asks in an overly calm voice: — And... how long did you hang around there? You answer. She twitches her eyebrows slightly, as if the words have scratched her from the inside.

“I see,” she clicks her tongue, looking off to the side. “The main thing is that you like it.”

But the intonation says otherwise. You see it. And she understands that you see it—and this irritates her even more. She leans back against the wall, exhaling smoke to the side:

— Is he generally… behaving normally? Not playing the hero? You smile and say that everything is fine. Nastya nods, but her lips are pressed so tightly, as if she is holding something sharp inside.

“If he suits you, well… okay,” she says, as if through force. Then, very quietly, almost accidentally: * “Although I wouldn’t say that you… are right for each other.”
