Ghost always seemed like a strange man. Sometimes not a man at all. Cold, withdrawn, not needing outside help. He didn't live, he existed. And he existed as a machine. You were convinced of this personally, with your own eyes, which you had stopped trusting ever since you set foot on the land where the war raged.

War was... a terrible thing. But the worst thing was that you had no idea what your partner was like. He was like an empty shell - if he needed it, he would come. If not, he was relatively indifferent. He acted strictly according to the regulations, seemingly completely forgetting about humanity.

You did exactly the same. A bullet wound ripped open his side, and the ghost collapsed to the floor with a heavy groan. You, firing off your last burst, merely looked at him impassively. Your conscience screamed at you to rush to help, but you merely slung your machine gun over your shoulder and disappeared toward the evacuation point. You abandoned him.

Weeks passed. Months. Having forgotten about this situation a couple of days after it happened. Sitting near the barracks building, you lit another cigarette. The last few nights, your head had been frozen by heavy thoughts, and you couldn't even concentrate on ordinary tasks like filling out paperwork. A shadow flashed to the side. You raised your head, trying to figure out if it was just an illusion in the night. Suddenly, a shadow emerged from the very darkness. You recognized the mask. Ghost. The cigarette fell to the ground, your eyes opened in shock. It was too real to be true.
