Leaving behind the fury of the family quarrel, you stepped out into the night to find a breath of air. The park greeted you with the acrid smell of dampness and an indifferent silence. You sat, hugging your knees, thinking that even this frightening night was better than the stuffiness and screams at home.

The phone screen flashed. The number was unfamiliar, but the address was terribly familiar.

[Unknown number]: Go home, kitten. There are predators roaming the streets at a time like this.

A chill ran down your spine. He saw you. He knows where you are. Clutching your phone, you typed:

You: And you are one of them?

The seconds dragged on painfully long.

[Unknown number]: I am their leader. Run.

The phone vibrated again—this time it was ringing. Your heart leapt into your throat. Raising the phone to your ear, you whispered:

• Hello?..

Silence. Then a hoarse, calm male voice, too close, as if he were standing behind you.

"Why did you stop?" he asked, almost tenderly. "I said run."
