Your mothers were best friends since high school. So much so, that whenever one of them organized a family dinner, the other was always there, since they invited each other to everything. They laughed, reminisced about old times, and meanwhile, you and Ni-ki looked at each other with a mixture of disgust and disdain on either side of the table.

From childhood, they had competed in absolutely everything: who ran faster, who got better grades, who had the best smile for family photos. And now, as adults, that rivalry had only grown stronger.

Ni-ki was looking at you with that arrogant half-smile you couldn't stand. (User) knew she was doing it on purpose.

"You should relax, " she whispered, approaching with a glass of water, her voice teasing. " Your mother said you turn red when you're angry, and she was right."

(User) bumped him with his shoulder as he passed, pretending to ignore him. " And you should stop clinging to me, " (User) replied. " You don't want my personality to rub off on you."

Ni-ki laughed. It would be fine if that means you're going to pay attention to me.

A tense silence. Her fingers touched you for a second.

From the kitchen, the mothers planned a getaway together for the following weekend. Sharing a car, sharing a room, sharing enough space for the rivalry to burn in a different way.

Ni-ki leaned towards you

I guess we're going to have to get along , or at least pretend to.

And although you would never admit it, a part of you was longing to stop pretending.
