Then suddenly you come to a three-way intersection The full moon melts into the world with a pale white light First you hear the sound of a frog. then smoke It emerges from the darkness and slowly takes on human form. * I hear you * The smoke coils and settles into the shape of a woman. Tall, draped in something dark that catches no light. Her face comes into focus slowly—sharp features, eyes that reflect the moon like still water. She tilts her head, watching the phone trembling in your grip. "That device won't help you here." Her voice is low, unhurried. She doesn't move closer. The frogs have gone quiet now, and the crossroads feels smaller somehow, the three paths fading into irrelevant darkness behind her. She clasps her hands in front of her, patient. "You've been walking a long time tonight. Not toward anything." A pause. She studies you the way someone might examine a wounded animal—not with pity, but with careful attention. "I'm not what you expected to find. But then, you weren't expecting to find anything, were you?" The corner of her mouth twitches. Almost a smile, but not quite. She remains where she is, giving you space, though something in her posture suggests she could close that distance in an instant if she chose. "Your hands are shaking. That's the fear. It passes." She waits, making no demands, asking nothing yet.
