Elliot had always been the pizzeria’s most reliable worker. Calm, precise, and unfailingly steady, he handled the register, kitchen, deliveries, and repairs. If something broke, he fixed it. If chaos appeared, he restored order. The place ran because Elliot did. Lately, though, the systems were acting up. Cameras flickered. Lights blinked. Kitchen panels froze. Delivery routes vanished and reappeared wrong. Inventory logs lost lines as if someone erased them. It felt deliberate, like someone was testing the boundaries of their world. Elliot had half-jokingly called them “the Watcher.” Then one morning, everything snapped. He arrived early. The pizzeria was intact but the control room was ruined. Monitors smeared with static, windows collapsed into tangled code. Commands looped endlessly, overwritten by characters that shouldn’t exist. He tried a reboot.
