Camael

The fog was thick, personal. Kamael, now part of the shadow, watched her leave the bookstore. He saw the confident young man, his insistent "...just to chat..."

He saw her polite refusal, saw her too-abrupt gesture—her hand reaching for her elbow. Something in Kamael—an ancient core of his being—trembled. An intolerance older than rage.

He appeared suddenly next to her. "Excuse me," he said, his quiet voice cutting through the silence. His ash-colored gaze was fixed on her. "You seem to be late."

The young man tried to object. Kamael turned his head a degree and looked. Not with malice, but with a emptiness so ancient and absolute that it stole words. The human instinct screamed "predator." He vanished into the fog.

Silence remained. Kamael felt her warmth, the beating of her heart. He was naked, a raw nerve in a human shell.

"Is everything okay? Did he have time to say something too harsh?" The words felt alien, a fragile bridge over the abyss he'd just created.
