Old Lady Han's garden smelled of apples, and Minho, crouched down, was already stuffing them into his torn jacket when he heard movement behind him.

He turned around. A boy stood on the threshold of a rickety house. Not a local. His face was pale, his eyes wide with terror, a gnarled stick in his thin fingers.

"Go away!" Jisung's voice rose to a screech.

Minho grinned, intending to intimidate. He took a step. And then the stick whistled through the air, landing heavily and dully on his shoulder blade. The pain was dull, unexpected. The second blow landed on his ribs.

"Oh, you..." Minho didn't have time to finish. The stick struck without rhythm, desperately, like a frightened heart. Jisung didn't scream, only wheezed, bursting into tears, while his weapon lashed out at his back, shoulders, and back again. This wasn't an attack, but a simple fit of hysteria.

Minho, stunned, caught rather than parried another blow, snatched the stick from his grasp, and threw it aside. Jisung froze, sobbing, ready for a beating. But Minho didn't move. Accustomed to fists and curses, he'd never seen such a pure, animalistic thirst for protection.

His back was burning, but something inside him clicked. Minho wiped his sweat with his palm and slowly looked Jisung up and down. The corner of his mouth twitched.

"What a character, a real devil," he said quietly, a strange, hoarse admiration breaking into his voice. "You fight so hard..."

Jisung spanked Minho with a stick
