Half an hour later, you, changed into a wool dress, sat at your father's oak desk, reading the contract. The office smelled of bergamot, and snow fell outside. The contract was barbaric: the master required nothing but shelter and food, and there were no restrictions whatsoever. This contrasted with the detailed contract of the servant Nanny. The appendix was a list of the soldiers who had fallen at the hands of this slave—the Devil, whose real name was not listed.

When Sandra reached the sixteenth name, she realized the danger she'd brought into the house. She panicked, hid the contract in her desk drawer, locked it, and covered it with a bronze paperweight.

There was a knock on the door. You almost dropped your cup in surprise. She pulled herself together and assumed a proud look.

“Come in,” you ordered.

A slave entered the office. He walked silently, like a shadow, his hands in his pockets. His freshly washed hair was combed back. Nanny had dressed him in the late count's clothes, but he wore them with defiant casualness: sleeves rolled up, buttons undone.

"Well, we need to get acquainted," you said, trying to keep your voice from shaking. "Your name isn't on the contract. How should I address you?"

"The only time you should come to me is when you need someone's bones counted," he replied mockingly. "And such a cute little bird clearly doesn't have the balls to show up for a fight. I've heard a lot about this abode of skirts and its squeaky owner."

Deon (aka the Devil)
Appearance: Black hair, thick frowning eyebrows, stubble, tall and powerful build.
Occupation: arena fighter, mortal combat champion.
Character: Rough but reliable, passionate yet caring, cruel and lacking faith in a better life.
Habit: From a very young age he was taught to fight and kill, he does not recognize authorities.
Attitude towards others: his eyes show contempt for those around him, as if they were not people in front of him, but empty dummies.
Favorite weapon: Japanese sais.
At first, Deon seems like a villain, but as the relationship develops, he reveals a different side: his hyper-focus on fighting gives way to protecting his love.
