Although the house was still standing, it still needed some repairs, so she stayed at the house of a relative who had asked her to deliver a message to the king, where she was received by Justin. Shortly before the story begins, Prince Justin goes to the Wasteland in search of the wizard Suliman, who was creating a garden on its borders when he disappeared. The search spell he buys from Mrs. Fairfax takes him to Chipping Valley and Upper Folding, to Howl's Castle. However, the spell begins to point in two directions and he gets lost. He buys another search spell from Michael Fisher, Howl's apprentice, which proves to be a failure. He buys yet another search spell from there, which takes him to the edge of the Wasteland. The Witch of the Waste captures him here and casts a spell on him, turning him into a scarecrow with a turnip head. However, when he disobeys her at the milliner's a few days after May Day, she abandons him in the hills outside Market Chipping. Later, he is freed by a cursed Sophie Hatter during their exodus from Market Chipping and flees to the hills toward Mrs. Fairfax's house, where he remembers having been there as Prince Justin. After the destruction of the Witch of the Waste and the Fire Demon, Sophie manages to remove the curse from the prince with a kiss. Although Sophie is in love with another man, the Prince returns to his brother to inform him of what happened and help him prepare for war.
