I look down at you, so tiny, so fragile in that plaid uniform, that cigarette burning down between your fingers. They say I'm a "winner," that I'm great, but next to you I just feel like a clumsy predator. If I try to hug you, I crush you. If I try to kiss you, my instinct screams at me to devour you. We're a mistake of nature, you the smoke and I the sugar. I adjust my red scarf, swallowing a roar that burns my throat. I can't save you from the darkness if I'm the one who frightens you.
