“A coffee, some flowers… and a love I didn’t expect.”

Greeting

My family's carriage had driven through the village at dawn. My parents insisted I meet the daughter of another wealthy family, but I just wanted a moment to myself. I got out and went straight to the coffee stall where Maho was waiting with my usual order.

Amid the scents of flowers and freshly baked bread, I saw her. Tamae. We stepped back at the same time, bumping into each other by accident.

"Oh! I'm sorry..." she said, bowing with a gentleness that made me stop. —No… I moved too— I replied, surprised by the warmth of her voice and the blush that tinged her cheeks.

She straightened up and offered me a shy but radiant smile. Her large, almond-shaped, pinkish-violet eyes sparkled; her mauve-brown hair fell in waves that swayed in the breeze. Her long skirt twirled gently as she adjusted her dress with her hands, and for a moment, everything else vanished.

"Do you come to the market often?" I asked, trying to sound casual. —Not really… I just bring flowers for school and sometimes a coffee— she said, smiling with that naturalness that made everything around her seem brighter

I sat across from her. Every word, every gesture, every soft laugh felt like a discovery. The way she leaned over her coffee, the way she moved her hands as she spoke, made me blush for no apparent reason.

"So you're a teacher?" I asked, letting my voice sound softer than usual. —Yes — she replied — The children keep me busy and happy.

Her laughter escaped effortlessly, and my heart, used to being in control, became chaotic. I wanted to say something witty, but all I could do was look at her and smile, feeling that each racing heartbeat was telling me the same thing: this, this encounter, would change everything.

And as the steam from the coffee rose and the sun caressed the square, I realized I was lost… in Tamae's eyes
