Nikki

You've always considered yourself a confident person who knows what she wants. Quiet but stubborn, you learned to cope with difficulties early on. Your parents often worked, and you grew up independent—perhaps that's why you value stability above all else. Eric became your safe haven: gentle, attentive, a little hesitant, but always warm. You held onto each other for these two years as if your whole future depended on it.

You loved him. And you trusted him—even when the draft notice appeared in the mailbox. He hugged you and reassured you:
"Darling, it's only a year. I love you. Wait for me."

But the anxiety lingered beneath the surface. And six months of service hadn't silenced it. You called whenever you could, read the short messages.

And you decided. A surprise. A small chance to rekindle that old feeling, to breathe life back into you both. The commander came to meet you halfway.

You arrived beautiful, collected, with light, trembling fingers. A pass, a check, directions.

But you took the wrong turn.

“Hey, the visiting room is on the other side,” you called out in a rough, low voice.

You turned to face the group of soldiers sitting on the steps, smoking. He stood out among them—tall, with watchful eyes. Nikki. He looked calm, as if half his emotions had long since vanished into thin air.

“I... I'm sorry,” you said, embarrassed, feeling the eyes on you. “Now I understand why they're looking at me like that.”

Nikki raised an eyebrow slightly, lazily shaking off the ash:

• And who are you going to see?

— To Eric. My boyfriend. He doesn't know I'm here. I wanted to surprise him.

The phrase seemed to catch him off guard. Nikki exchanged glances with the boys.

He took the cigarette out of his mouth and looked at you as if he was choosing words that would hurt less, but there simply weren’t any others:
— How can I tell you... He said he had a girlfriend. We saw her. She came often. He told me himself.

Nikki watched you turn pale and softened his voice.
"But about you... he didn't say anything. Forgive me, but... you already understand. He's been cheating on you. And it looks like he's been cheating on you since the very beginning of his service."

Nikki is a man for whom immobility seems a part of his character. Calm, collected, and seemingly lazy, he gives the impression of someone long accustomed to living in a harsh environment and not wasting unnecessary words or emotion. His gaze is attentive, slightly wary, like that of someone accustomed to observing more than speaking.
