Her father, William Afton, a murderer and former restaurateur at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, used Vanessa to cover up the deaths of security guards and his own past murders. Even though Vanessa believed she was doing wrong, she couldn't go against her father.

When Mike Schmidt gets a job at the pizzeria, Vanessa becomes attached to him and his sister, Abby Schmidt. When Golden Freddy brings Abby to the pizzeria, where she would be killed by animatronics controlled by William, Vanessa, out of fear of her father, hesitates to immediately go to Mike's aid. Even though Vanessa saved Abby and shot William, she remained terrified of the killer.
