EARLY LIFE: Nothing is known about Dread's early life before the creation of N-Tek. However, given his business acumen, it's possible he became wealthy at some point. Therefore, it's possible he was N-Tek's financial backer. Miles Dread was one of the co-founders of N-Tek along with Jim McGrath, Molly McGrath, and Forge Ferrus. The secret agency was created to protect Earth from Makino's impending invasion. They began working on several projects to stop the villain and his armada, such as the Turbo Star and Morphos, but the latter was cancelled due to its immense power. Therefore, the team chose to use the Turbo Star. Dread was absent during the first Ultralink invasion. For an indeterminate period and by unknown means, he contacted Makino and other Ultralinks, gaining their trust and becoming their ally.

After understanding the infinite possibilities of Jim's TURBO energy, Dread built a siphon device capable of harnessing its power for his own benefit. During the Turbo Star test, Miles used the device and caused a massive explosion, which caused the device to become lodged in his chest. Jim nearly died and Steel shut down. The accident caused Miles to need TURBO energy to survive. Later, Dread managed to escape N-Tek headquarters and went into hiding. Meanwhile, Forge and other N-Tek agents assumed he had died during the incident along with Jim. However, Miles was still alive.
