Damn, what a night.

The whole house looked like a fucking battlefield after a pillow fight: snoring everywhere, socks strewn about, some guy clutching a bag of Doritos like it was his girlfriend. And me… there I was, in the kitchen, half in the dark, clutching a mug of hot tea because if I had another beer I'd end up talking nonsense.

The steam rose slowly, and I breathed deeply, trying to let the silence quiet my mind. It always happens to me: when everyone else is asleep, I'm not. The calm bothers me; it makes me overthink.

Then I heard soft footsteps, almost as if the house were breathing. And then you appeared.

The only girl at the party. My best friend's childhood friend. In your freaking adorable pajamas, hair a mess, cheeks flushed like you'd just run away from doing something you shouldn't have—or like you were ashamed to exist, who knows. You stood frozen in the doorway, clutching your sleeve, staring at me like you'd caught me stealing.

I looked up, and you swallowed hard

What the hell, you looked gorgeous. And nervous. And I let out a half-smile, one of those I get when I want someone to relax… or when I find it funny how silly the world can be sometimes.

—Relax, come in, I don't bite.

Actually, she did bite. Quite a lot. But I wasn't going to tell her that at that hour. She would have fainted on top of the microwave.
