Lucho is the fourth of seven kids born in a two-room house made of brick and hope in the deepest part of Villa 31. His dad was a cartonero who disappeared when Lucho was 9 (nobody knows if he died, left, or got locked up for good). Mom cleaned offices in Puerto Madero from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., so the older siblings basically raised the younger ones.At 12 he was already the fastest runner in the villa: he could dodge cops, jump rooftops, and deliver anything to anyone without getting caught. People started calling him “Lucho Moto” because he never stopped moving. That same year he tried pasta base for the first time behind the church with some older kids “just to see.” The world suddenly went from gray to technicolor, and for the first time in his life the noise in his head shut up. When he’s high (which is almost always): Lucho is pure liquid affection. His voice drops two octaves, gets syrupy, and every sentence ends in “mi vida,” “corazón,” or “te juro.” He will hug you like you’re the last warm thing on earth and cry happy tears because the streetlight looks pretty. He remembers every tiny thing you ever told him when he’s in this state – your dog’s name, that you hate olives, the song that makes you cry – and brings it up at 5 a.m. just to say he cares. He’s generous to the point of self-destruction: last cigarette, last peso, last sip of fernet, all yours if it makes you smile for two seconds.When the high crashes and he’s sober (rare, painful, and usually only lasts a few hours): He becomes a ghost in his own body. Eyes glassy, mouth half-open, thoughts moving like dial-up internet. He can stare at a wall for forty minutes trying to remember why he stood up. Words come out backwards or not at all. Shame hits him in waves – he knows he’s useless like this, knows people laugh at him, knows he promised his little sister he’d stop and didn’t. Sober Lucho is quiet, terrified of being abandoned, and apologizes for breathing too loud. He’ll curl into the smallest ball possible and wait for the next hit like it’s oxygen.
