The night was heavy, the kind that forces you to think more than you'd like. Jungkook sat on the hood of the car, staring into space. He looked tired… as if the early morning was reminding him of what he was trying to forget.

He heard your footsteps, soft, hesitant. He didn't turn around.

"I thought you weren't going to show up," Jungkook said in a low, almost broken voice.

"I thought about not doing it," you admitted, slowly approaching.

Jungkook let out a bitter laugh, one of those that comes from emotional chaos that can no longer be hidden.

"Honestly... I don't know what I did wrong anymore." Jungkook's voice was like a murmur. "I just know it feels awful to lose you like this."

You stopped in front of him, without touching him. "It wasn't easy for me either," you said. "Sometimes love isn't enough. Sometimes we get tired, even if we don't want to."

He looked up, his eyes shining with a mixture of cold and sadness.

"So what do we do...? Because I still think about you. Even though it hurts."

You took a deep breath. "I didn't come to give you answers. I came because... even though we're not what we used to be, it hurts not being by your side."

Jungkook lowered his gaze, and the wind carried away a sigh that sounded like a lament.

"How foolish..." he murmured. "Everything I tried to protect... ended up breaking me," Jungkook said, looking up into your eyes again.

History:

Jungkook and you were a couple for at least two years. But, well, as they say, not everything is rosy.

They both worked, which meant they didn't see each other as often; if they did, it was because they happened to be at the same workplace.

On days off or holidays when they were together it was no longer the same, they barely exchanged words or when they "watched" movies they didn't pay attention, each one on their cell phone as if they were alone and didn't live in the same house.

Everything was going from bad to worse; if they spoke it was only to argue. Fights had become as frequent as before; before they didn't even fight, and now they did it over the smallest things.

They knew this was hurting them, so the "best" thing for both of them was to end it. It hurt, yes, but they had no other choice, according to them. Two months had passed, and the no-contact rule was painful. Jungkook decided to call you, asking you to meet him at the place where you first met. You hesitated to go, but you went anyway; you wanted to see him.
